What is International Women in Engineering Day?
Monday, 23 June 2025 marks International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) – a worldwide celebration recognising the remarkable contributions of women in engineering.
Now in its 12th year, INWED is championed by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) and stands as the only global awareness campaign dedicated to recognising, celebrating, and elevating the voices of women engineers across the globe.
This year’s theme: #TogetherWeEngineer
The official theme for INWED 2025 is #TogetherWeEngineer. This theme underscores collaboration, inclusivity, and the power of diverse perspectives in solving engineering challenges. By celebrating collective achievement, it reinforces the message that engineering excellence is built through cooperation and shared purpose.
Why it matters in 2025
- Gender imbalance remains stark: In the UK, women still account for less than 17% of the engineering workforce, up only from about 15% in 2021, indicating persistent underrepresentation.
- The “leaky pipeline” remains a challenge: Women are disproportionately leaving engineering roles during mid-career (most notably between the ages of 35 and 44) often due to inadequate support, limited advancement opportunities, or inflexible work environments.
- Economic stakes are high: Engaging more women in engineering is essential to filling demand for new talent (around 124,000 engineers annually in the UK) and driving innovation
Empowering change through #ShesAnEngineer
Our #ShesAnEngineer campaign aligns powerfully with this year’s theme by:
Showcasing role models: We’re shining a spotlight on women leaders in engineering – from structural design to aerospace – highlighting individual stories that make the profession relatable and inspiring.
Fostering community: Echoing #TogetherWeEngineer, #ShesAnEngineer creates a shared space, through webinars, mentoring circles, and social media, to connect women engineers, provide support, and grow networks.
Driving inclusion: Our campaign actively promotes workplace flexibility, return-to-work policies, and sponsorship for women who have stepped away, steps critical to halting the “brain drain” and aligning with calls from EngineeringUK and WES.
Inspiring the next generation: By visiting schools, launching scholarships, and hosting hands-on STEM workshops, #ShesAnEngineer echoes INWED’s mission to encourage girls toward engineering pathways.
Talent Advisory: We partner with clients to refine their recruitment strategies, enhance training initiatives, and review compensation and benefits packages to better attract, support, and retain women in the workplace, fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
We are also committed to giving back to our community by sponsoring organisations like WES and SheCanEngineer.
